Social Inclusion Strategy

Stevenage Borough Council are committed to driving forward a policy agenda that includes a strong socio-economic theme that responds to building a prosperous and inclusive place to live, work or visit. Demonstrated through the Councils commitment to provide a range of services to the community through a number of interventions.

In order to continue to grow and prosper there were a number of fundamental issues, surrounding excluded communities and pockets of deprivation across Stevenage. To address these issues, there must be a commitment and understanding of the complex issues and needs that create excluded ommunities through early identification, support and preventative action, positive change is achievable.

In 2003, the Head of Community Development put together a Social Inclusion Position Statement – Breaking the Cycle of deprivation; promoting social inclusion in Stevenage. The statement set out to:

Define social exclusion

To provide a snapshot overview, of where we are now

Policy Framework in terms of the strategic context surrounding the social inclusion agenda locally and regionally.

Identify 7 Action Areas complementary to the Eastern Region Social Strategy

In order to move forward with a proposed social inclusion strategy driven by the Councils Policy Unit, it was agreed that a number of workshops would take place, focusing on and liaising with a range of stakeholders. The aim is to focus on those responsible for tackling exclusion in Stevenage albeit through a range of interventions and service areas. And provide the opportunity to review and consult on the position statement to assess the work undertaken and the priorities for Stevenage.

Three workshops were proposed, consulting with SBC Officers, LSP Partners and at member level within the council.
